Hidden Hunger The Nutrients Your Body May Be Missing
Why eating enough food does not always mean getting enough of the nutrients your body needs.
Micronutrient deficiencies can quietly affect energy, bones, thyroid function, blood health and development. Here’s why nutrition quality matters—and why extreme dieting can sometimes make the problem worse.
For years, nutrition conversations have been dominated by restriction. Eat fewer calories. Cut carbohydrates. Avoid fat. Remove sugar. Follow the latest elimination diet.
But there is another side of nutrition that deserves just as much attention: what your body may not be getting.
Micronutrients are the vitamins and minerals we need in relatively small amounts, but their effects are anything but small. Iron helps transport oxygen, iodine is needed to make thyroid hormones, calcium supports bones and muscles, and vitamin A plays an important role in vision and immune function.
And this is not simply a problem affecting people who do not have enough food. According to the World Health Organization, more than half of children under five and more than two-thirds of non-pregnant women of reproductive age globally are deficient in at least one key micronutrient.
That makes “hidden hunger” a very real modern health issue.
When tiredness may have more than one explanation
Iron deficiency is one of the best-known examples.
Iron is needed to make haemoglobin, the protein in red blood cells that carries oxygen around the body. When anaemia develops, people may experience tiredness, weakness, dizziness or shortness of breath.
But it is important not to assume that every case of anaemia is caused by an iron-poor diet. WHO notes that anaemia can also result from infections, inflammation, chronic diseases, blood loss and inherited conditions, while deficiencies of folate, vitamin B12 and vitamin A can also contribute.
The latest WHO estimates show just how widespread the problem remains. In 2023, about 30.7% of women aged 15–49 worldwide had anaemia, including 35.5% of pregnant women.
So persistent fatigue should not automatically be treated as a sign that someone simply needs more iron. Finding the underlying cause matters.
Calcium is about more than bones
Calcium is often associated with osteoporosis, but its role is much broader.
Almost all of the body’s calcium is stored in bones and teeth, where it provides structure and hardness. Calcium is also involved in muscle movement, nerve signalling, blood-vessel function and hormone release. Vitamin D helps the body absorb it.
Our calcium needs also change with age. In the United States, for example, the recommended intake is 1,000 mg per day for adults aged 19–50, rising to 1,200 mg for women aged 51–70 and for adults aged 71 and older.
That does not mean everyone needs calcium supplements. Food sources can contribute significantly, and excessive supplementation is not automatically better.
For healthy aging, the bigger picture matters: adequate calcium, sufficient vitamin D, protein, physical activity and other lifestyle factors all contribute to maintaining bone health.
Iodine: a small nutrient with a major job
Iodine is another nutrient that can be easy to overlook.
The thyroid uses iodine to produce thyroid hormones, which influence many functions throughout the body. Severe iodine deficiency can cause thyroid problems and, during pregnancy, can seriously affect fetal brain development.
One of the most successful public-health strategies for preventing iodine deficiency has been the use of iodized salt. WHO continues to recommend salt iodization as an effective population-level strategy. At the same time, public-health efforts to reduce excessive sodium intake make it important to balance both goals rather than simply consuming more salt.
Vitamin A and the importance of global nutrition
Vitamin A deficiency remains an important health concern, particularly among children in vulnerable populations.
Vitamin A is essential for normal vision and immune function. WHO identifies vitamin A deficiency as a leading cause of preventable blindness in children and notes that deficiency can also increase vulnerability to severe infections.
This is why food fortification, supplementation programmes and access to diverse diets remain important parts of global health—not just individual dietary choices.
The problem with extreme restriction
Micronutrient deficiencies are one reason nutrition should be about more than cutting foods out.
A highly restrictive eating pattern can make it harder to obtain a broad range of vitamins and minerals, particularly when entire food groups are removed without thoughtful nutritional planning.
That does not mean everyone needs the same diet. Plant-based, vegetarian and omnivorous diets can all provide excellent nutrition when they are well planned.
The practical goal is variety.
Vegetables and fruit provide a range of vitamins, minerals and other beneficial compounds. Beans, lentils, nuts and seeds can contribute minerals and protein. Dairy products or fortified alternatives can provide calcium. Eggs, seafood and other animal foods can supply nutrients such as vitamin B12, iron and iodine.
The best choice depends on a person’s age, health, culture, access to food and individual nutritional needs.
Nourishment—not perfection
Micronutrient deficiencies rarely announce themselves with a dramatic warning. Sometimes the signs are subtle. Sometimes there are no obvious symptoms until a deficiency becomes significant.
That is why nutrition is better viewed as a long-term pattern rather than a daily test of perfection.
If someone has persistent fatigue, weakness, unexplained changes in health or concerns about a possible deficiency, guessing with supplements is not always the answer. A healthcare professional can help determine whether testing is appropriate and identify the underlying cause.
The bigger lesson is simple: healthy eating is not only about what you remove from your plate. It is also about what you consistently put on it.
In a world increasingly focused on restriction, making room for nutrient-dense, varied foods may be one of the more useful—and sustainable—ways to think about health.
