Researchers have previously highlighted concerns for drivers and pilots, and a 2026 case report again drew attention to the possibility of accidents associated with light-triggered sneezing.
That doesn’t mean people with photic sneezing need to be frightened of driving or going outdoors. It simply means that knowing your own triggers can be useful.

Simple Ways to Reduce the Trigger
There is no specific medical treatment or cure for the photic sneeze reflex, and most people don’t need one.
However, reducing the sudden intensity of light reaching your eyes may help some people. Wearing sunglasses outdoors or using the shade of a hat can make the transition into bright conditions more comfortable.
Some medical sources also mention gentle pressure around the area between the nose and upper lip as a possible way of interrupting a sneeze. However, this isn’t a guaranteed solution, and it shouldn’t be relied upon when you’re driving or doing anything that requires full attention.

The photic sneeze reflex is a good reminder that the human nervous system doesn’t always behave in ways that seem obvious.
