Can a Daily Multivitamin Help Slow Aging? Here’s What Science Is Starting to Suggest

A daily multivitamin is often seen as a simple safety net—something people take to cover small gaps in their diet. But recent research hints at a more intriguing possibility: it might also play a subtle role in how our bodies age.

In a randomized trial involving 958 older adults, researchers explored how daily multivitamin–multimineral supplements might affect biological aging. Instead of just looking at how people felt or functioned, they measured something more precise—DNA-based aging markers, often referred to as epigenetic clocks.

These clocks estimate biological age based on changes in DNA over time, offering a glimpse into how quickly the body is aging beneath the surface.

The findings were modest but meaningful.

Participants who took the supplements showed slightly slower increases in these aging markers:

  • About 2.6 fewer months of biological aging per year on one measure
  • Around 1.4 fewer months on another

Interestingly, the effect appeared stronger in individuals who were already aging faster than average.

What Does “Slower Aging” Really Mean?

It’s important to understand what this doesn’t mean.

This isn’t about looking younger overnight or reversing aging completely. Instead, it suggests that certain daily habits—like consistent nutrient intake—may influence how your body ages over time, at a cellular level.

Think of it less like hitting the brakes, and more like gently easing off the accelerator.

  • The effects observed were modest, not dramatic
  • The study focused on older adults, so results may differ for younger people
  • The participant group was not highly diverse, which limits how widely we can apply the results

In short, a multivitamin isn’t a shortcut to longevity—but it might be one helpful piece of a much larger puzzle.

The Bigger Picture of Healthy Aging

No supplement can replace the fundamentals. Long-term health and aging are shaped by a combination of habits:
