Can Walking Help Protect Your Memory? New Research Suggests It May Strengthen the Aging Brain

As people live longer, protecting brain health has become one of today’s biggest health priorities. Many adults worry about becoming more forgetful with age, but growing scientific evidence suggests that one of the most effective ways to support memory doesn’t require expensive supplements or complicated fitness programs.

It may simply involve putting on a comfortable pair of walking shoes.

A landmark study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) found that regular moderate aerobic exercise, particularly brisk walking, may help maintain the health of the hippocampus—the part of the brain responsible for learning and forming new memories.

The findings offer encouraging news: while some age-related brain changes are normal, lifestyle choices can play an important role in keeping the brain healthy.

Why the Hippocampus Matters

The hippocampus is a small but essential structure located deep within the brain.

It plays a major role in:

  • Forming new memories
  • Learning new information
  • Spatial navigation
  • Processing everyday experiences

As we grow older, the hippocampus naturally becomes smaller over time. This gradual change has been linked to slower memory processing and an increased risk of cognitive decline.

Although aging cannot be stopped, researchers are increasingly discovering that the brain remains adaptable throughout life.

What Did the Study Find?

Researchers followed 120 adults between the ages of 55 and 80 who were generally inactive at the beginning of the study.

Participants were divided into two groups.

One group completed a moderate aerobic exercise program that included brisk walking for about 40 minutes, three times per week.

The second group performed stretching and flexibility exercises.

After one year, MRI brain scans showed that participants in the walking group experienced an average 2% increase in hippocampal volume, while the stretching group continued to experience the gradual brain shrinkage commonly seen with aging.

The researchers also found improvements in memory performance among those who participated in regular aerobic exercise.

Why Does Exercise Benefit the Brain?

Scientists believe physical activity supports brain health in several ways.

Regular aerobic exercise can:

  • Increase blood flow to the brain.
  • Improve oxygen delivery to brain tissue.
  • Support healthy blood vessels.
  • Reduce inflammation.
  • Stimulate the production of Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF), a protein that helps nerve cells grow, communicate, and survive.

BDNF is sometimes called the brain’s “fertilizer” because it supports learning and memory throughout life.

You Don’t Need Intense Workouts

One of the most encouraging findings is that participants weren’t completing extreme workouts.

The benefits came from consistent, moderate activity.

Healthy options include:

  • Brisk walking
  • Cycling
  • Swimming
  • Water aerobics
  • Dancing
  • Low-impact aerobic classes

The goal is to choose an activity that raises your heart rate while still allowing you to carry on a conversation.

Consistency matters more than intensity.

Other Ways to Support Brain Health

Exercise works best when combined with other healthy lifestyle habits.

Experts recommend:

  • Getting 7–9 hours of quality sleep each night.
  • Following a balanced diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, fish, nuts, and healthy fats.
  • Keeping blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar under control.
  • Staying socially connected.
  • Challenging the brain through reading, puzzles, learning new skills, or hobbies.
  • Managing stress through relaxation techniques or mindfulness.

Together, these habits help create an environment that supports healthy brain aging.

Growing research continues to show that the brain remains remarkably adaptable throughout adulthood.

Regular walking and other forms of moderate aerobic exercise may help preserve memory, support healthy brain structure, and improve cognitive function as we age.

While no single activity can completely prevent age-related memory changes or dementia, staying physically active is one of the most effective, evidence-based steps people can take to protect long-term brain health.

Sometimes, one of the best investments in your memory starts with something as simple as taking a walk.
