Cyclospora Outbreak Why Fresh Produce Is Behind a Growing Food Safety Concern

Fresh fruits and vegetables are an essential part of a healthy diet, but a growing outbreak of Cyclospora infections is highlighting the importance of food safety. Health authorities are investigating cases of cyclosporiasis, a gastrointestinal illness caused by the microscopic parasite Cyclospora cayetanensis. Recent outbreaks have been linked to certain fresh produce, including leafy greens, herbs, and berries.

Unlike many common foodborne illnesses, Cyclospora has a unique life cycle. The parasite does not spread directly from person to person. Instead, it must spend several days in the environment before it becomes infectious. This means contamination usually occurs when fresh produce comes into contact with contaminated water or soil during growing, harvesting, or processing.

Symptoms often appear about one week after eating contaminated food and may include persistent watery diarrhea, stomach cramps, nausea, bloating, fatigue, and loss of appetite. Without treatment, symptoms can last for several weeks or even return after improving, making the illness particularly frustrating for patients.

One of the biggest challenges is identifying the source of an outbreak. Because symptoms develop days after exposure and laboratory testing takes time, contaminated products are often no longer available by the time health officials trace the source.

  • Wash fresh fruits and vegetables thoroughly under running water before eating or preparing them.
  • Stay updated on food recalls and public health alerts involving fresh produce.
  • If you develop prolonged diarrhea after eating raw fruits or vegetables, seek medical care. Cyclospora requires a prescription antibiotic for effective treatment and does not usually resolve quickly on its own.

At Wellcore Weekly, we believe healthy eating goes hand in hand with safe food practices. Staying informed about foodborne outbreaks and following proper food hygiene can help you continue enjoying fresh produce while reducing your risk of illness.
